Why Public Bathroom Stalls Have Gaps: Explained

When you’re out and about, you might have to use a public restroom. It’s not always a pleasant experience since the stalls can be dirty or unpleasant. But have you ever wondered why there’s a big gap under the door of the stall? It seems like it would make things even more uncomfortable, right?

Well, there are actually good reasons for this gap. If the door went all the way to the floor, it would be harder for people outside to see if someone inside needed help. The gap helps with visibility in case someone is in trouble. It also helps emergency responders to quickly get someone out if they need to.

Additionally, the gap makes it harder for people to do things they shouldn’t be doing in public restrooms, like engaging in inappropriate behavior or using drugs. So, while it might seem strange, there are important reasons for that gap under the stall door.

Another reason for the short stall doors is that they are standard sizes, which means they’re easier and cheaper to make and install. Plus, they make it simpler to clean the floors. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright used these types of doors in the Larkin Building in Buffalo, New York, which set a trend for business buildings.

Having a gap under the door also helps with air circulation, which prevents bad smells from building up. It also discourages people from staying in the bathroom too long.

So, even though it might feel a bit awkward, there are good reasons for those gaps under the stall doors in public restrooms.
